The leading Company for paper, cardboard and packing manufacture, Smurfit Kappa, is attending one more year Fruit Logística to show their late innovations that they have launched to the market with a clear objective: improving the competitiveness of the farmers and the commercialization companies forgoing on quality, because they show products that improve the environmental and economic sustainability and they have the highest levels of food safety.

Smurfit Kappa has developed Eco Tray,a cardboard tray thermoforming that is supposed to be the eco, sustainable alternative to the traditional polystyrene trays.

Destinated to the point of sale, Eco Tray is a multiporpouse and versatile packing that can be used in sectors such as the fruits an vegetables sectors, fresh products (meat, charcuterie...) or pastries. This trays, made of rolling cardboard, in micro channel, offers the same stability of the cardboards and it's 100% recyclable.

Eco Tray adapts the measurements of the packing product, making sure that they run a high use of the space in transport as in packaging, and this means a great saving in the logistic chain and in CO2 emissions.

It's also suitable for direct contact with food, to achieve this, and to guarantee the 100% of food safety, Smurfit Kappa has created for its manufacture a White Hall with two isolated zones: the first one is destinated to hands hygiene (sink, electric mechanism for hand drying, and odourless gel) and the incorporation of the wardrobe (gloves, hat, white coat, shoe covers), which is an obliged performance before getting into the place where trays are manufactured, carrying out the requirements of application of the protocol BRC_IoP for high risk. And the second one consisting of another hall where you can see the machinery for the manufacturing process of the trays, and has all the mandatory safety measures to guarantee safety during the whole process.

Miguel Hernández, company manager of Smurfit Kappa in Almería, says that Eco Tray "is a product in which we trust, and that is having great success in the market".

The Company completes its exhibition in Berlin with "P84 system, the C-37 for bulk cargo, Hercules Project, Smurf box, and a great acceptance in the market due to its great looking and innovation", Hernández said.

The financial crisis is also affecting the auxiliary industry for agriculture. Miguel Hernández remembers that the 2011 exercise has been "really hard, like a roller coaster increasing the values of raw materials, such as virging fiber and also recycled papers", and announces a hard 2012, due to this increase.

The Smurfit Kappa plan in Vícar is a model in prevention of labour risks, because it gains more than 800000 without one single accident. It's certified in UNE-ISO-9001-208 from 1997 for having a quality system; also OHSAS-18001-2007 for counting on a safety system and health system at work from 2008; UNE-EN-ISO-14001, because it has an environmental system from 2008, and BRC-IOP certificate in Food Safety from 2009."That means we have guarantees in quality, safety and health at work, and also environmental and food safety guarantees", Hernández said.
